Government and Civil Services

A responsible government is critical to a city's welfare. In West Bend, a responsive representative government headed by an elected part-time mayor and city council make municipal decisions based on recommendations from a full time City Administrator and department heads. Many volunteer citizen committees support the work of the city and form the base of government. Open public meetings and sincere efforts of elected officials to represent the wishes of their constituents encourage a democratic, citizen-centered process.

At the center of city government is a 2020 land use and zoning plan that guides all decisions. West Bend's industrial and business parks serve as home to a diversified group of businesses and industry and are readily accessed by major transportation routes. Trees and recreational land buffer residential areas from the industrial parks.

Public transportation needs in West Bend are served by a shared ride taxi service that also serves Washington County. In addition, the Washington County Commuter Express provides an inter-county bus service to participating businesses and communities within its borders. Local taxes also help support a municipal airport that features two runways, a neighboring recently expanded National Guard Medical Evacuation Unit. A privately owned flying service provides jet service to destinations throughout North America.

West Bend is also the county seat for Washington County. An elected County Board Chair and 30 elected County Board Supervisors represent the people of Washington County. Our county is proud of its many parks and historical museums. Human service needs are met by several county departments and facilities. The county is the repository of records and archives for all communities in its jurisdiction. A four-court system with ancillary services carries out justice in the county. Washington County administers legislation developed at the state level.

Town government completes local grass roots representation. There are 13 townships in Washington County.
